German philately offers some of the most fascinating and valuable stamps in the world. From the pre-unification German States to rare wartime issues, here are 20 German stamps worth serious money.
Most Valuable Deutsches Reich Stamps (1872-1945)
The most valuable Deutsches Reich stamp is the 1920 Germania 2 Mark with the quatrefoil watermark (Michel 152 Y), catalogued at about €50,000 used. No Reich stamp is anywhere near €1 million: the German stamp that crossed that mark is the 1851 Baden 9 Kreuzer error, from before the Reich, which was knocked down on cover for €1.26 million (hammer price, before buyer's premium) at Heinrich Köhler in 2019. Values below are Michel catalogue values in euros, and the condition they refer to is given for each one.
- Germania 2 Mark, quatrefoil watermark (1920, Mi. 152 Y): about €50,000 used. Only the watermark makes it rare; the same stamp without the quatrefoil is far cheaper.
- Nothilfe souvenir sheet (1933, Block 2, Mi. 508-511): about €13,000 used, €7,000 mint never hinged. Four stamps after Moritz von Schwind's "Rosenwunder" (the Miracle of the Roses); 64,000 sheets printed.
- Zeppelin Chicago Flight (1933, Mi. 496-498): about €4,000 mint never hinged.
- Large Shield 18 Kreuzer (1872, Mi. 28): about €3,600 genuinely used, with a certificate.
- Zeppelin Polar Flight (1931, Mi. 456-458) and South America Flight (1930, Mi. 438-439): about €900 and €650 unused (hinged).
These are the exceptions: most Germania stamps are affordable and the 1921-1923 inflation stamps are mass-produced. Zeppelin overprints are often forged, so don't count on any of these prices without a BPP expert mark or certificate.
